How to think about AI agents

Agentic AI is the best since sliced bread, but is a fresh baguette better for film production?

What can I used AI agents for in film production, and when are traditional tools better?

AI, or not AI, that is the question

Part of my business is providing crew and equipment for film productions. The other part is producing films.

If a customer needs a 2nd AD on 10 dec in Stockholm, then this is not an AI question. Neither if a cinematographer need a few lights next week in Högsnäs.

If a customer have a script and would like to have a rough estimate of equipment for a film, then this is a task where AI is beneficial.

First of all, you need to find out when AI is  beneficial.

Can we share?

The other question is what type of information we can share.

On a conceptual level, we manage information about customers, film productions, actors, locations and whereabouts, e.g. call sheets.

For each of these different type of objects we need to keep track of if they are subject to GDPR or not. Privacy not always a clear cut in this business.

The second thing is confidentiality. A film production in progress can range from public to secret, depending on a number of factors. Same goes for actors, and it usually changes over time.

This means that we need to manage both types of metadata per instance, before allowing AI agents enter the scene.

Cost control

Third subject is cost control.

When I installed my first public web-server in 1995, I had to pay per Mb traffic, so the cost was hard to budget.

Today, my problem would be the same. If exposing an agent to the public internet, how to control the cost if I pay for tokens.

Planned next step

I have to assure that our back-end systems have correct data. As example, we have a resource planning module for employees and contractors. First step is to assure each individual’s weekly schema is in the system so we can use it for planning. After that, we can talk about integrations, chat bots and AI agents.

We have enough of business context to let AI do a rough estimate of production cost within a range for a script according to a template. This would be a nice service to offer on-line, and also a way to find potential clients. I.e. a good use of Artmann Intelligence.

In the end, we need to have both sliced bread, baguettes and croissants on the breakfast menu.
